Pine Island Elementary staff preparing for next school year
Teachers report Aug. 2, Open House Aug. 5, classes start Aug. 10

Pine Island Elementary School’s theme for the 2021-2022 school year “Getting Back to Normalcy” is something Principal Tom Millins feels very strongly about as he and his team begin planning for the upcoming school year.
Millins said last year students lost out on so many opportunities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He plans to restore many of the activities students have been used to for many years.
Teachers will begin heading back to school on Aug. 2, to start preparing their classrooms, participate in pre-service training and prepare for student’s return on Aug. 10.
This year’s annual Open House is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 5, from 4-5:30 p.m. and all are welcome to attend in person.
Millins said this is the first step in “Getting Back to Normalcy” with students and families having the opportunity to be back on campus. Open House will consist of students receiving their teacher assignments and having an opportunity to meet and greet their teacher. Other activities include setting up bus schedules, parent pick-up numbers and getting a chance to reunite with their friends and staff members.
PIE is continuing with a number of initiatives this year which include the implementation of the i-Ready program in math and reading and a Positive Behavior Intervention and Support initiative which assists students in academic and behavioral support.
Academically, Millins said he is putting much of his resources back into the classroom to ensure academic success. The principal stressed this is critical because so many students lost ground during the pandemic. His goal is to regain the instructional momentum before the pandemic hit.
Millins said he is eager to meet many of the parents face to face and continue working with the students and staff to ensure the continued success at Pine Island Elementary School.
