Summer BreakSpot Program offers 78 sites for youth to receive free meal
The Summer BreakSpot Program — a free meal distribution initiative for youths — is under way.
Breakfast and/or lunch will be provided to youths 18 years old and younger at 45 community locations and 33 schools throughout Lee County, including three sites on the islands.
The School District of Lee County Food and Nutrition Services Director Kandace Messenger said the Summer BreakSpot Program allows the district and its Food and Nutrition Services Department to provide the free meals while school is out during the summer.
“The School District of Lee County has partnered with the Summer Feeding Program for 20-plus years,” Messenger said. “Providing summer meals to the students when school is not in session is an important service that we are able to provide. Food and Nutrition Services is happy to provide this service to the students and families of Lee County. We look forward to seeing you there.”
Most of the 78 sites opened Monday. The program will wind down starting Friday, July 23, with a final end date of Wednesday, July 28.
“The parent will need to check in, for security reasons, at any site location unless it is a park, or an apartment complex. The child must be present for them to receive the meal service — breakfast, or lunch depending on the time they arrive at the site,” Messenger said.
Due to Food and Nutrition Services still setting up sites with the Florida Department of Agriculture Consumer Services, individuals are asked to check for a Summer BreakSpot site by dialing 2-1-1, texting “FoodFL” to 877-877, or visiting www.SummerBreakSpot.org.
