Greater Pine Island Little League season ends
The Greater Pine Island Little League Division finished its season recently at Bobby Holloway Jr. Memorial Field. In the final game of the 2021 season, played in a steady drizzle, the Pine Island Sea Sluggers defeated the Pine Island Reds, 8-0, to finish the season undefeated, going 10-0.
Chance Barnhill started the game on the mound for the Reds and was immediately greeted by a double off the bat of Slugs’ lead off hitter Davis Wold. Wold later scored for a 1-0 Slugs lead.
The Slugs added a big five run second inning, highlighted by two-run doubles off the bats of Wold and Mark Smith.
Luke Harre started on the hill for the Slugs and pitched two scoreless innings before being relieved by Wold, who pitched two scoreless innings of his own and was the winning pitcher. Dalton Dooley completed the shut out for the Slugs by pitching a scoreless fifth inning.
Ty Young followed Barnhill to the mound for the Reds. The Slugs got run scoring singles by Wold and Mark Smith in their half of the fifth for the final 8-0 score.
Other hits for the Slugs were recorded by Carter Olson and Dooley, who both had singles.
The Reds had singles off the bats of Mason Wells and Ty Young for their only two hits of the game.
Closing ceremonies were held on Saturday, June 5, at Holloway Field.
The Pine Island All-Stars were recently selected. The team includes Carter Olson, Michaela Zingarelli, Luke Harre, Dalton Dooley, Trey Clark, Mark Smith, Davis Wold, Mason Wells, Jaime Huerta, Chance Barnhill and Ty Young. The All-Star squad will see competition at the Hancock Little League Fields on Hancock Bridge Parkway, Saturday, June 19.
