ROAR member facilitates island cleanup on Earth Day

Pine Island ROAR member Kathy Chumley coordinated an Earth Day island cleanup on April 22, with the help of some willing islanders.
“It went very well,” Chumley said. “We had quite a few people. Some of them worked down in Matlacha from around Miceli’s up to the Wellness Center. Some others worked around Yucatan restaurant and traveled toward the center.”
In total, Chumley said over 70 pounds of refuse was collected by, mostly ROAR members, who she said were from Pine Island and also from Cape Coral.
Having been a librarian, Chumley did some research on the history of Earth Day.
“On the first Earth Day, back in 1970, about 20 million people participated in various activities and currently, more than one billion people around the world are active Earth Day enthusiasts,” Chumley said. “This year’s theme was ‘Restore the earth,’ with a focus on the development of green technologies. Anything that’s going to help our earth be more sustainable for the future is helpful. We have one planet and we all have to live here.”
