Tacos El Viejon on Pine Island getting everyone’s attention

If you find yourself sitting at the stop sign in the center of Pine Island, you may see a line at the new food truck everyone is raving about.
Before Tacos El Viejon started operating at the end of February, owner Alfredo Gomez had been making food at a stand he built outside his nearby home in Bokeelia. There were so many people coming to eat, said Mishel Aguilar, who works for him, they decided to expand and get their own food truck.
“My wife and I have always had a dream to have our own business,” said Gomez. “When we were selling outside of our home, we saw how great we were doing. We decided to come over here because we saw a need to offer the island authentic Mexican food.”
“The food is hot and ready, and I love that I can get authentic Mexican cuisine on the island when I visit,” said Sydney Hollbrack, a daytripper from Fort Myers.
Currently, they serve more than 150 people a day, who can choose to drive away with their food, or sit in the shade at the picnic tables. They also do catering, and according to Aguilar, the most popular menu item is the burrito, although they have an array of food, including tortas, tacos, quesadillas, hamburgers and fries. Ultimately, Gomez wants to open a restaurant here on the island, he says, where people can come and be comfortable.
They are currently located on the corner of Pine Island Road and Stringfellow Road at the four corner stop and open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. They take all forms of payment, including Apple Pay, making it easy to swing by for lunch or dinner.
