The second Matlacha Christmas Tree lighting is right around the corner. According to Billie Young, the master of ceremonies, as part of “Let’s light up Matlacha” holiday spirit, the second annual 18.5-foot tree lighting will take place at the intersection of Pine Island Road and Island Avenue, Thursday, Dec. 17, at precisely 6 p.m. as carolers sing.

“This event is an extension of the community of Matlacha,” said Young, who points out that various island activities seem to be interwoven and she hopes the tree lighting event becomes as integral to Matlacha as the lighted dolphins on the bridge and the Christmas Eve luminaries.

“I want to send out a special thank you to George Williamson who has generously donated the use of his land and chief engineer Jake Sadlak, for his time and expertise to build the tree,” said Young.

“Barnhill Seafood Market will provide the needed electricity, and Pine Island Plumbing supplied the materials for the tree,” Young continued. “Santa, played by Michael Rose, will have a bench set up for children to visit with him. DJ Caleb will have holiday music and Lee County Sheriff’s will provide safe patrolling on Pine Island Road, courtesy of Bert’s Bar and Grill. Packaged homemade cookies will be offered as a thank you for any donation to cover the cost of the event.”

Young also asks that everyone please observe safe distancing and wear a mask.
