The Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island is having a Supermarket Sweep fundraising event Monday, Nov. 23, at Winn-Dixie in St. James City, at 7:30 a.m.

According to Kiwanis member Cindy Bickford, many events have been cancelled due to the pandemic, which has affected numerous local businesses, so this was a great way to raise funds and boost spirits.

“People can buy a ticket for $10,” said Bickford.

Third prize is a $50 gift card to Winn-Dixie, donated by Winn-Dixie; second place is a $100 gift card to Winn-Dixie, donated by Samaritan Health and Wellness; and the first place winner will have a chance to leave with up to $1,000 in Winn-Dixie products after a 10-minute sprint through the store, with a limit of two matching items.

Bickford said Kiwanians present at the event will be in masks and practicing social distancing for safety.

Tickets have been sold on Wednesdays and Saturdays in front of the store from 9 a.m. to noon, and are still available from local Kiwanians, on the website and at the Century 21 office on Stringfellow Road, Bickford said, adding that you don’t have to be present to win.

The drawing will be live streamed on the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island Facebook page, Monday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m.

“The winner will be contacted immediately,” said Bickford, “so they can start scouting out the store and preparing for their run.”

The winner doesn’t have to run, she said, they are allowed to choose someone else to run for them. When local Winn-Dixie Store Manager Dan Loughren heard the idea for the fundraiser, Bickford said he was more than happy to help.

“I think I called him in early summer and he was very excited about participating,” Bickford said. “He thought it was a great idea. We picked a date and decided to do it in the morning before the store opens. This is right before Thanksgiving. The timing is perfect for stocking up for yourself, your friends and family or your local food bank.”
