Pine Island Elementary to host Drive-Thru Veterans Day program on Nov. 10

Pine Island Elementary invites all veterans to join the students and staff for a special time of recognition Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. (the gates will not be open prior to this). Those attending will enter the back of the school via Tipton Drive and drive around the circle to be honored at this event.
In previous years, PIE students and staff have recognized and honored our veterans through music, special readings, poems and letters. However, this year the program has to be a little different to comply with social distancing and district guidelines. COVID-19 is not going to stop the students and staff from recognizing and honoring our veterans as the school has done for so many years.
This year, Pine Island Elementary will be hosting a Drive-Thru Veterans Day program. Students will be singing, waving and holding signs. Students are currently working on a gift for each veteran as well. While this program will be different than it has been in the past, the kids are still working as hard as ever to make it meaningful and something our local veterans will be proud of.
Before exiting, each veteran will receive a free catered lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse and a special gift from the students.
Students and staff are excited to continue this Pine Island Elementary tradition to honor local veterans.
“Amazing, touching, moving, a true tribute” — these are just some of the words that have been used to describe the annual Veterans Day Program put on by the students and staff at Pine Island Elementary. For the past several years the school has invited parents, members of the community, and veterans to this event. Students begin working on this event over a month in advance to make sure they are honoring the veterans in the best possible way.
Students were asked why it is important that they recognize and honor our veterans. Pine Island kids seem to have a great understanding of why we do this each year. Some responses were: “They risk and sacrifice their lives for ours,” “If we didn’t have Veterans, we wouldn’t have the rights we have,” “They have made our world a better place.”
