Jim Friedlander — a love worth returning to

Jim Friedlander

Islander Jim Friedlander found a love for writing when he was in college. After college, during his time in the workforce, his love for writing had to be placed on the back burner, in order to make a living.

“I didn’t really have time to do much writing, but when I retired, the situation changed and I got back to it,” Friedlander said.

His love for writing made its way to the surface yet again and he decided to write his first book, “Soul Passage,” which took just over four years to complete. He describes the process of writing as an acquired skill that takes a lot of time.

“The first one, I think, takes a lot more editing than others. You write it and then you go back through and you realize you lost a lot of the skill that you’d acquired in the earlier days. It took a long time to get that one going and then the others have gone faster,” Friedlander said.

Although not all of Friedlander’s books fall into the genre of historical fiction, this is where he seems to have found his niche.

Going the route of self-publishing, he said, was an easy one, considering the amount of money a publisher wants to sell his book or series, while still requiring him to do most of the work selling it.

“One of the main pieces of advice that I would give to people who want to write is, first of all do your due diligence as far as editing goes — make sure you get a good editor, so by the time you’re done writing you’ve got a pretty good product,” he said. “Next, I would say, beware of sharks in the water. Everywhere you look there are people who promise to make your book a best seller, and 99.9 times out of a hundred, it’s just not going to happen. The next thing is to investigate how you’ll go about publicizing your book. Most people are going to self-publish and that becomes a full time job — promoting your own books and you have to be willing to do that.”

Friedlander admits the trials and tribulations of the writing process are worth it to him, because of his affection for the craft.
