Luretta Williams-Sims is patiently awaiting final word on whether sale on the building that houses her restaurant, Capt’n Con’s Fish House, will be closed, and whether she will be asked to vacate the premises.

As it now stands, the sale closing is scheduled to take place on Aug. 12.

Capt’n Con’s Fish House is located at 8421 Main St., Bokeelia, at the northern end of the island near the Bokeelia Fishing Pier.

“We don’t know exactly what their plans are yet,” said Sims, speaking of the new owners, she said are three investors. “They have not talked to us about anything.”

Her feeling, she said, is that within 60 days of the closing, Capt’n Con’s could be history.

Rumors that the building had been sold reached Sims before she had even heard anything, making her wonder what is happening. To date, the information she’s gotten has been sparse at best, leaving Sims in a “wait and see” mode until August.

“I didn’t even know there was an offer,” said Sims. “I’ve been month-to-month for years. They didn’t want me there 25 years ago and they let me stay. They had the place up for sale for a long time and now somebody is serious about buying it. Everybody keeps backing out on it.”

As far as opening her restaurant in another location, Sims said only time will tell the story, but that she would never leave the island. Although she’s seen evidence on social media that people seem to think she owns the property, Sims would like to dispel the rumor, saying she only leases it.

“I’ve had employees that have been with me since I first opened my doors. That’s the sad part — those guys that have been faithful to me. I’ve been there a long, long time,” said Sims. “It’s gonna be really hard, and I may never want to go back to Bokeelia again after they kick me out, because I don’t think I could stand to see what they’re gonna do.

“As long as we’re there, we’re gonna try to keep everything as usual, right up until the last day,” she added. “We’re open till they close us.”
