Island development, septic to sewer conversions among agenda items for August GPICA meeting

The Greater Pine Island Civic Association will lead a discussion of development on Pine Island during the organization’s August meeting. The meeting will also include an update on the association’s efforts to gain Lee County support for a study looking at the possibilities of expanding capacity of the wastewater treatment plant in St. James City and converting residential septic tanks to a central sewer system.

The agenda includes:

GPICA President Helen Fox will present an overview of the June public information session on the Publix plaza and proposed 94 townhome development; she’ll discuss the Lee County rule that residents may not contact commissioners regarding zoning objections and outline previous attempts to limit development using the 810/910 rule.

Noel Andress, a Bokeelia resident and expert in Florida development who has served on the boards of the Lee County Local Planning Agency, the Southwest Florida Watershed Council and the Lee County Airport Special Management Committee, will provide an overview of how the development process works and how residents can get involved.

The GPICA board will also provide updates on the:

n The repaving of Pineland Road and our meeting with staff from the Lee County Department of Transportation.

n Plans for redeveloping the Bocilla Island Seaport at the north tip of the Island in Bokeelia.

n Committee work on septic to sewer conversion.
