Hookers’ 2021 School Supply Drive for Pine Island Elementary under way

By Submitted - | Jun 9, 2021

While school is not quite out, it is time to look ahead to the fall as things get back to normal. The Matlacha Hookers have started their annual summer school supply drive, which began last week and runs through July 31.

The Hookers are once again counting on the generosity of the island residents since there are many families on Pine Island struggling to make ends meet.

Program chair Karen Durand said, “It will be a short summer with the 2021-2022 school year starting on Aug. 2, for teachers and on Aug. 10, for the students and we want to ready. The P.I.E. teachers have provided a list of needed school supplies to ensure the students get off to a great start for a successful school year. This Matlacha Hookers program helps our teachers avoid having to use their own money to purchase supplies to ensure the island school continues its program of excellence.”

Here are the items that PIE teachers have asked for: large size backpacks with no wheels, headphones for grades K-1 and earbuds for 3-5, pencil boxes, scissors (blunt tip only), #2 pencils, erasers (both cap and large pink rectangles), whiteboard markers (erasable and fine tip), expo markers dry eraser, glue sticks, colored pencils, pens (black, blue and red), marbled composition books, spiral notebooks (one subject, wide rule), pocket folders with middle brad in all colors, 3-ring binders (both 1 inch and 2 inch), Crayola markers (washable). Crayola crayons, Scotch tape, yellow highlighters, 3×5 index cards, facial tissue, stickers (fun, numbers and alphabet letters), sticky notes, zipper baggies (all sizes), wipes and paper towels–Both product and monetary donations are welcome.

School supplies may be dropped off at the following participating businesses through the end of July: in Matlacha, at the Post Office, The Perfect Cup, Blue Dog Restaurant, Trader’s Hitching Post, Yucatan Bar and Grill, CW Fudge, the Old Fish House Marina Restaurant and Miceli’s Restaurant; at the Center, bring supplies to Little Lilly’s, El Pollo Rico, Pine Island Community Church, Nick B’s Artisan Food Market, Pine Island Chamber of Commerce, Cutting Ties Salon, Pine Island First Baptist Church, Winn Dixie, Dollar General, Island Grill, Centennial Bank, Pine Island Methodist Church or the Pine Island Elks Lodge; in Bokeelia, you may donate your items at the Pine Island Library, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church or Cap’n Cons Fish House; and in St. James City, donation bins can be found at the Pine Island Auto Care, the Moose Lodge, VFW, Ragged Ass Salon, Low Key Tiki and Pine Island First Baptist Church.

Monetary donations can be made by cash or check, mailed to Matlacha Hookers, PO Box 111, Matlacha, FL 33993. Be sure to write “school supplies” in memo area. Or donations can be made online at https://www.matlachahookers.org/. Click the donation button at the bottom of the website home page and select the “Pine Island Elementary School Supply” fund name in the “(Optional) Use this donation for” drop down box.

All monetary donations are passed on to the school, either through supply purchases to fill in the gaps at the beginning of the school year, or by check so teachers can meet further supply needs throughout the year.

The P.I.E. students, teachers and Matlacha Hookers greatly appreciate islanders’ generosity and willingness to help.
