Fair comparison
To the Editor:
A recent contributor suggested that our governor, Ron DeSantis, failed to reopen the state in a “safe manner.” Unfortunately, much of the criticism we see today is based on partisan adventurism and when one digs a little deeper, we often find omitted information or data meant to distract or detract from the actual results.
No one will remember the number of people that contracted the virus, much like influenza, the only important number is those that died from contracting the virus.
According to Statista.com, as of June 29, 2020, the number of fatalities in New York are 165 souls per million residents topped only by New Jersey with 169 COVID deaths per million. Florida stands at 16 deaths per million. So, since New York has 10 times the death rate per capita than Florida, does that mean that Gov. DeSantis has done 10 times better at managing the crisis than Gov. Cuomo or does it mean that Gov. Cuomo has done 10 times worse than our Florida governor?
Governor DeSantis has performed masterfully in an uncharted environment created by a Chinese virus that many have used as a basis for transparently political criticism wherever possible. Even if the condemnations are false, they still get printed or regurgitated by the usual suspects.
