MCA requests support from M/PIFCD in annexation fight

The Matlacha Civic Association has requested support from the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire District in the continuing threats by Cape Coral to annex property in Matlacha. In a letter to the Fire Commissioners of Oct. 25 of this year, MCA President Karl R. Deigert reported that the court ruling quashing the annexation is now final. President Deigert expressed the board’s unhappiness that in 2017 the Fire District settled its dispute with Cape Coral over annexation rather than joining MCA in its successful law suit against Cape Coral.
In its settlement with Cape Coral, the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire District agreed not to challenge the annexation and to continue providing fire service to the annexed properties in exchange for Cape Coral paying to the Fire District the taxes it would have lost through annexation. The settlement agreement is now “null and void” because the annexation was overturned.
The MCA letter to the commissioners states that “Cape Coral’s new effort [toward annexation] opens the door for the Commission to stand with Matlacha residents and bolster the opposition in denying annexation.” Fire Chief Benjamin Mickuleit responded to the MCA request by placing the issue on the agenda for the Fire Board of Commissioners upcoming meeting on Nov. 13, at 5 p.m., at Station No. 1 at Pine Island Center. All are invited to attend.
