Dr. Marcus Sherry and Riverside Dental Associates have welcomed Dr. Eric Stevens to the Pine Island practice. Since graduating dental school, Stevens has been practicing dentistry for four years in his father’s Bonita Springs practice. He has been seeing patients on the island since July 9.

Stevens grew up in Bonita Springs and after graduating Barron Collier High School attended the University of Miami as an undergraduate and then University of Louisville Dental School.

“I didn’t plan on becoming a dentist,” Stevens said. “My father’s a dentist and I saw how hard my father worked and I just didn’t think it was something I wanted to do. When I was in college I was interested in a number of things and my dad suggested I work in his office for a while. That’s when I became interested in dentistry.”

After graduating dental school, while working at his fathers Bonita Springs office, he completed a one-year implant continuum (intensive implant training) with his father.

Stevens interest took a turn towards TemporoMandibular Joint and occlusion known as TMJ. Occlusion is a fancy term for the way your teeth fit together. Almost 1/3 of the population suffers from TMJ occlusion. Stevens spent 3 months with Dr. Piper in St. Petersburg. The Piper Clinic is recognized internationally as one of the leading surgical clinics treating TMJ joint disorders.

“TMJ is the foundation for the mouth and a simple bump on the chin can cause the jaw to shift,” Stevens said. When this occurs it causes shifting and can cause problems with the teeth. It causes wearing and cracking and can create a number of problems: migraine pain patterns, fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain. Modern dentistry needs to focus more on TMJ.”

Once Stevens completed his work at the Piper Clinic, he returned to southwest Florida looking for work.

“I was looking for two things,” Stevens said. “I’ve always wanted to live and work on an ‘Old Florida’ island and I was looking for more independence. It’s like it was destiny when Dr. Sherry called me about working on Pine Island.”

Stevens started working at Riverside Dental on July 9 and on Friday, July 13, rented a place to live on Pine Island.

“In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve noticed the people are very nice,” Stevens said. “I believe in treating people with what they need. I practice dentistry from a medical perspective trying to reduce problems with the mouth to improve their lives. This is my dream job and I’d love to be a positive influence here for the long time to come.”
