Talkin’ ‘bout this generation

By Staff | May 2, 2018

We’ve seen the mean memes.

We’ve read some of the online pundits, have scrolled past the comments tagged to opinions and news stories.

But we’ve also attended the ongoing senior awards ceremonies now wrapping up at schools throughout Lee County.

And if anyone thinks that “today’s” teens are a generation that is somehow lacking, they are spending way too much time on social media and info-tainment tainted web sites and not enough time in the real world where thousands -yes thousands – of local youths have already left their mark in a variety of ways, including the traditional three A’s of academics, athletics and the arts.

We commend all of these young achievers for their effort and hard work.

A couple of things of special note.

Advanced placement and International Baccalaureate courses have raised the academics bar – and grade point averages. Some of the highest achievers have racked up 5.0-plus GPAs – and for college-level courses taken in high school.

The standards for academic excellence are high and those in today’s top tier are to be especially applauded.

We recognize, too, those being honored for things such as their strong record of community service or overcoming odds to earn a full-ride to their state university of choice.

Those who have carved out time for volunteerism are to be praised as are those who slayed their challenges to reach their goals.

And one final cheer.

Among the awards ceremony honorees are seniors who have already chosen careers, committing early to the giving-back professions of education or the military.

To them we say thank you and may those scholarships awarded today foster success along the paths you have chosen.

We congratulate Lee County’s high school senior award honorees.

It is you who define your generation.

Best wishes and again, congratulations.
