Century 21 Sunbelt Realty Inc. of Pine Island held its 4th annual shred day on Friday to benefit the Pine Island Food Pantry. For each box or bag of documents to shred, islanders brought a donation of 5 non-perishable food items.

“As a realty office, we need to keep our records for a certain number of years, but when that time has passed, we want to make sure that these sensitive documents are being safely disposed of,” said Mike Shevlin, Century 21 Sunbelt managing broker on Pine Island. “The most efficient way for us to get rid of our own documents was to hire a company that specializes in getting rid of them. Then we thought there were probably a lot of us on the island who had documents that needed to be shredded. Why not make it a new way to help our neighbors?”

“We had a great day last week,” Pine Island Food Pantry president Dave Grueser said. “In just 4 short hours we received 429 pounds of food, plus $ 360 in donations. This is especially important as we go into summer our donations fall off and this will help carry us through the summer. I want to thank everyone for their generosity.”
