The Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce held their first annual Mullet Toss March 10 at Matlacha Park.

“This is the first Mullet Toss that the chamber is sponsoring,” executive director Jennifer Jennings said. “The Matlacha Mariners sponsored this event until they disbanded this year. It’s actually the 27th annual Southwest Florida Mullet Toss Championship.”

There were more vendors than ever this year circling the “mullet tossing field,” including, Olde Fish House Marina Restaurant, Shark Tooth Fairy, CW Fudge Factory, Bert’s Pine Bay Gallery, Uni-scape Landscaping, Matlacha Hookers, Budweiser, and Dream Vacations.

Local artist Mel Meo, recent recipient of the GPICC Al Mills Citizen of the Year award, displayed her artwork as well as selling and signing the official 2018 “Eat More Mullet” Mullet Toss T-shirts that she designed.

Several local chefs participated in a contest to determine who makes the best Fish Dip. After the public voted, the winners were 1st Place Saltwater Smokehouse, and 2nd Place was a tie between Andy’s island Seafood and Lazy Flamingo.
