Matlacha Specialty Market now open
Sandwiched in between Bert’s and Fishware Outfitters is a new addition to Matlacha / Pine island Matlacha Specialty Market, owned by Adam and Karla Klayman.
“We found Pine Island and Matlacha when we came to Southwest Florida to buy a mango farm in Bokeelia,” Adam said. “When that didn’t work out, we were passing through Matlacha and realized there’s no place to stop and grab something to eat. We noticed that this building was empty and decided to find out if we could rent it.”
“Some of my best memories are of a small town market,” Karla said. “Where they had a little bit of everything and everybody knew each other. That’s what we wanted to create here a feel good place.”
Matlacha Specialty Market carries everything from beer and wine to locally made “smokey” hot sauces, deep fried peanuts with different seasonings, non-GMO gluten-free chips and Bloody Mary mixes.
“Our concept of the store is as a ‘grab and go’ …,” Adam said. “One thing I’d like our customers to know is that we carry as many local products as we can.”
The store also features collectibles and art from local artists.
“We trademarked the term ‘Hooked on Matlacha’ and put the slogan on T-shirts and other things. We are also working on a fundraiser with the Matlacha Hookers. Twenty percent of our T-shirt and cooler sales go towards their scholarship program.”
The Matlacha Specialty Market is at 4299 Pine Island Road, N.W. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.
