Last Friday, the Pine Island Knights of Columbus presented Pine Island Elementary School Principal Rob Mazzoli with a check for $1,687. The money was raised from the its annual Tootsie Roll Campaign.

“We had a very good year this year,” Pete McKeown said. “We raised almost $1,700 for Pine Island Elementary by standing outside Winn-Dixie and the Circle-K convenience store. When people heard that the money was going to Pine Island Elementary special needs, they were giving $5s, $10s and even $20s.”

The Knights of Columbus has four core principles:

“Charity: Our Catholic faith teaches us to ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself.’ Unity: None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that together we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together we support one another. Fraternity: The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died often prematurely. Patriotism: Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both.”

“I would like to thank Helen Armani and Gloria McKeown for their help with this year’s drive,” McKeown said. “We certainly couldn’t have done it without them and a special thanks to the people of Pine Island for their generosity.”

“Thank you so much,” Mazolli said. “We really appreciate all of the support this island gives to Pine Island Elementary every year. You guys have been so generous to us over the years and we really do appreciate it.”

The Pine Island Knights of Columbus meets at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m..
