Cape man remains hospitalized following Saturday crash
A Cape Coral man remains hospitalized after driving his car off the road and striking a palm tree.
William R. Edwards, 35, was listed in critical condition Tuesday at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was transported following the crash near U.S. 41 and Palm Drive in Fort Myers, according to officials.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Edwards was driving an Acura ILX northbound on U.S. 41 Saturday at 1:45 p.m. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled in a northwesterly direction just south of Palm Drive and the front left section of the Acura collided into plants located in the median of the road.
The vehicle then traveled in a northeasterly direction, crossing all of the northbound lanes of U.S. 41. It exited the road on the right shoulder and the right middle section of the Acura struck the palm tree. The top of the palm tree fell off, and the vehicle came to a final stop in a landscaped area near the road.
The accident is not alcohol related, according to the FHP. The crash remains under investigation.
