Hammers & Hope Team seeks donations for project
A Cape Coral organization is raising funds to help provide a family with a place to call home.
Members of the Cape Coral Construction Industry Association created the Hammers & Hope Team for Women Build, a Habitat for Humanity program. It is the second year that the CCCIA has taken part.
“It’s right up our alley in terms of building and renovating homes,” Tyra Read, the team captain, said. “And we, the CCCIA, love to give back to the community – that’s always part of our mission.”
Women Build is a program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. It brings together women to address the housing crisis, according to the website.
“Women Build is all about empowering women to basically be able to put a roof over their head and take care of their families,” she said.
Like Habitat for Humanity, the new homeowner helps with the build alongside volunteers.
“They also have to put work in,” Read said.
The Hammers & Hope Team’s goal is to raise $3,000 by April 11.
“We raise funds to be able to make it possible, then we go in and actually renovate or build the home, depending on the situation,” she said. “The homes are dedicated the day before Mother’s Day.”
Read noted that each project costs about $100,000.
“There’s many, many different teams that help raise that $100,000,” she said.
“But the more money we can raise, the more help it is for Women Build,” Read added.
The build dates for the home are April 23 to May 6.
“It’s basically just a two-week period that we have,” she said.
The tentative date for when the Hammers & Hope Team is to help is April 26.
Read noted that team members do not have to volunteer on the same day. They can sign up for a build day that works better for them, or even sign up for multiple days if they have the time and interest.
The public can sign up and join the team; they do not have to be part of the CCCIA.
“They do need to be a woman,” she said.
However, no experience is required.
“They will teach you everything that you need to know, whether it’s painting, caulking, laying tile,” Read said. “They have really great supervisors, and the great thing is the supervisors are also women.”
Each team member is asked to raise or donate a minimum of $100.
“We’ve done really good with raising funds,” she said.
Read has taken part in the Women Build program for several years.
“It’s very dear to my heart,” she said.
As a single mother at age 21, it was a huge relief when Read bought her first home.
“I was the only caregiver,” she said.
“It made me feel secure that we would always have a roof over our heads,” Read added.
