The Palms has a new ‘Little Free Library’
There is a new “Little Free Library” at the heart of The Palms in Bokeelia. Little Free Libraries operate on the principle “Take a Book Return a Book.”
“We built and installed a Little Free Library back home in our neighborhood in Michigan,” children’s librarian and teacher Jane Saxon said. “It was such a huge success, and the kids just love it so much, we decided to do another one here.”
“There is nothing I like to do more than read,” Saxon said. “I hope this Little Library inspires children here at The Palms to read. We have both English and Spanish books available.”
According to the Little Free Library website (www.LittleFreeLibrary.org.) the purpose is “to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. There are over 36,000 Little Free Library book exchanges around the world, bringing curbside literacy home and sharing millions of books annually.
“My husband Don built the library and when we were looking for someone with artistic ability to paint the library we asked the manager here at The Palms,” Saxon said. “He recommended Ms. Taylor Young. Taylor Young was inspired by the nature that surrounds us and painted birds, fish and of course palms on the Library.
“These Little Libraries promote literacy and the love of reading,” Saxon said. “I’m really happy to see these children come and borrow the books. This has been very exciting for us and for the children.”
