Bicycle Poker Run set for this weekend

2 min read

The Pine Island Moose Lodge has been holding its annual Bicycle Poker Run for over 10 years. This year’s “run” is set for Saturday, Feb. 20.

The Bicycle Poker Run will start at the south end of the island. Stops include Low Key Tiki Restaurant, Ragged Ass Saloon, American Legion Post #136, KOA Campground driveway, Tropical Point Drive, VFW Post #4353 and ends at the Moose Lodge.

“High card winners receive monetary prizes,” event chairman Tom Akers said. “And during the afternoon, we will give away T-shirts, hats, gift certificates and gift cards. This is an island event that helps our economy, provides over 200 participants with an enjoyable day and, most of all provides the necessary funding for our Youth Scholarship Program.”

The proceeds of the Moose Poker Run help provide $1,000 scholarships to Pine Island high school seniors.

“Last year we presented five scholarships for $1,000 each to island seniors,” Akers said. “And to date we have provided over $50,000 in scholarships to help defray the incidental costs of attending college or Vocational training for our graduating seniors.”

The Moose Lodge bases these scholarships on need. Students volunteer a resume and academic achievements. Applications for these scholarships are available for the School Districts West Zone high schools.

“We are asking for donations of gift cards, appropriate items or a cash donation for this event,” Akers said. “Being an island, many residents appreciate gift cards to mainland and island businesses which help build clientele.”

Dave Axler, from Pine Island Cycles, will provide minor bicycle checks and also a bicycle for the drawing at the party.

The board of of-ficers, event chairman and Lodge Gov. Lynn Fisher have extended their appreciation for donations to the annual Bicycle Poker Run and especially for enabling them to present scholarships to deserving graduating seniors on the island.

Please make donations by Saturday Feb. 20.

“The party begins at the Moose immediately after the Poker Run,” Akins said. “Music will be provided by ‘Last Resort.'”

Pine Island Moose Lodge #1954 is at 8903 Stringfellow Road in St. James City.
