Over Valentine’s Day weekend, Feb. 13 and 14, the Pine Island Art Association will be hosting its 44th annual art show at the Matlacha Community Building.

Hours of the show are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days.

“The show is located inside the Matlacha Community Building in Matlacha Community Park, 4577 Pine Island Road, just west of the Pine Island Bridge,” Phyllis Dowd said. “It is Greater Pine Island’s biggest event of the year.”

Southwest Florida residents, art collectors and tourists look forward to this weekend knowing it will be their opportunity to view the current work of so many talented local artists.

“These are artists familiar with the area and comfortable depicting the vibrant colors and flavor of Southwest Florida,” Dowd said.

There are works large and small, in acrylic, pastel, watercolor, drawings and oil paintings. Shoppers will be able to choose from Florida landscapes, seascapes, flowers, birds, wildlife, beach scenes, boats and sunsets – paintings that just seem to belong in your home. All the work has been framed and is ready to hang.

Last year, local artist Nancy Werth won “Best in Show” with her painting of two snowy egrets entitled “Duet.”

“This was a picture I took in the small islands north of Bokeelia,” Werth said. “These are pictures you can only get when you’re out on the water. I was kayaking up above Bokeelia and there were a whole bunch of birds and I snapped several pictures. This was translated from one of those pictures.”

The special Small World category is always a popular section and will be well represented at this show.

“There will also be more than 500 of our popular PIAA 3 ” X 4 ” mini paintings,” Dowd said. “Each one has been double matted and signed by the artist. The paintings are just $10.”

Special metal or wood frames for the minis are available for $10 or $15. These paintings can be displayed alone or in a group.

Guests at the show will be greeted by the members at the door. Shoppers will also have the chance to meet the artists, chat with the locals and be invited to sample some home baked delights.

A visit to the PIAA Show provides an opportunity to spend some time in Matlacha. This historic district, once a fishing village, is a thriving arts community. Old fishermen’s cottages have been converted into brightly painted galleries, shops, restaurants and fresh fish markets.
