A Cape Coral man sustained fatal injuries in a single-vehicle accident on I-75 over the weekend.

Timothy Gerald Gardner, 47, died at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he was taken Sunday following the crash near mile marker 174 in Sarasota, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

At 10:30 a.m., Gardner was driving a Ford F250 south on I-75 in the left lane. As he began to change to the right lane, he reportedly lost control of the truck. The Ford veered to the right and began to rotate. It exited the roadway onto the west shoulder, where the front of the Ford hit the guard rail.

According to the FHP, the truck continued traveling south on top of the rail. The collision with the rail caused the Ford to overturn, resulting in Gardner being completely ejected from the truck.

The Ford overturned one time, entered the emergency lane and struck a concrete bridge rail.

Gardner was reportedly not wearing a seat at the time of the accident.

It is unknown if the crash is alcohol related, the FHP reported.
