The Great Calusa Poker Run to benefit Calusa Land Trust, Jan. 16
The Great Calusa Poker Run will be held Saturday, Jan. 16. The goal is to enjoy the day while collecting poker hands at various locations.
“The Pine Island Boat Club will be celebrating their 32nd anniversary April 19, 2016,” member Mike Mendelson said. “The club has been supporting the Calusa Land Trust for many years and this year’s proceeds from the Great Calusa Poker Run will once again go to the CLT.”
The Calusa Land Trust was founded 40 years ago with the purpose of protecting the natural diversity and beauty of Pine Island by acquiring, managing and preserving land in perpetuity.
“The Calusa Land Trust presently holds title to about 2,100 acres to be preserved and maintained in perpetuity,” CLT President John Kendall said. “In addition, CLT has donated $170,000 to Lee County to stimulate its purchases. 20/20 acquisition formulas give priority to local financial support and, thus, the reason CLT has caused a disproportionate amount of its purchases to be on Pine Island.”
Participants can visit the seven poker run stations over land or water. Maps showing dealer stations will be distributed prior the poker run.
Participants can bike, walk, drive or boat to the following stations: 4111 Galt Island Ave. (Bob and Bonnie Kellen); Pine Island Shores (2063 Macadamia Lane Ron and Pink Wesorick); Ragged Ass Saloon (3421 Stringfellow Road Monroe Canal); 3047 Skipper Land (Judy and Woody Woodruff); 2131 Oleander (Waterfront Restaurant – Henley Canal); 2276 Carambola (Milt and Sandra Hilt) and Woody’s Waterside (3051 Stringfellow Road).
Or, participants can boat to: Long Cut; Pine Island Shores (2063 Macadamia Land); Chino Island; Blind Pass; Jensen’s Marina (Captiva Island); and finally Woody’s Waterside Monroe Canal.
The best poker hands will win $1,000 (first); $350 (second) and $150 (third). There will also be a “losers” drawing for $100 (however you must be present to win).
“The PIBC motto of safe boating with friends is still intact with several club themes,” Mendelson said. “‘Do you want to have good times with the crowd’ and ‘If you go aground, there is always someone around.'”
