1 min read

A North Fort Myers man was fatally injured early Tuesday morning after he was struck by an SUV while trying to cross Bayshore Road near New Post Road.

Emery Earl Okerlund, 77, died on scene after he attempted to cross from the north shoulder to the south shoulder of the street at 6:36 a.m. Okerlund “was in the crosswalk as the traffic lights were green for both the eastbound and westbound lanes” when a GMC Yukon driven by Amanda Eileen Lapon , 24, entered the intersection, according to a crash report prepared by Florida Highway Patrol.

Lapon realized there was a pedestrian in the crosswalk and made an evasive maneuver to the right, but the vehicle struck Okerlund, the report states.

Lapon did not sustain any injuries.

The investigation is continuing.
