Arrest made in August shootings, Cape man charged with attempted homicide
A Cape Coral man has been charged with attempted homicide in connection with an August shooting investigators say was drug-related.
Alec Royce Rivero, 20, of 3203 N.E. 14th Pl., Cape Coral, was charged after officials with the Cape Coral Police Department say their investigation into a double shooting led them to identify Rivero as the shooter.
The investigation began on Aug. 27 after Cape Coral Police responded to the Cape Coral Hospital ER in reference to two people admitted with gunshot wounds – one in critical condition, the other with non-life-threatening injuries,
“Investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as Alec Rivero, 20, of Cape Coral, was known to the victims,” a release from the Cape Coral Police Department states. “The victims, the suspect, and another subject spent time together in Miami before driving back together in one vehicle. The victims fell asleep in the back seat on the way back.”
The fourth person was dropped off at a residence in North Fort Myers around 3 a.m.
“A short time later, one victim was awakened by Rivero rifling through his pockets and pointing a gun, threatening to kill him. An altercation ensued and Rivero shot the victim multiple times. The second victim woke up and found herself and the first victim covered in blood, and Rivero gone. The second victim drove to Cape Coral Hospital. At the hospital learned that she too had been shot,” the release states.
He remained in custody Friday morning. Bond has been set at $500,000.
Cape Coral Police detectives spent the last several weeks gathering evidence from the vehicle, conducting interviews, and retracing the events of that night, police said.
Detectives were able to gather sufficient evidence to establish probable cause for the arrest of Rivero, the release states. Cape Coral Police Street Crimes Officers located Rivero Thursday afternoon at 3203 N.E. 14th Pl., took him into custody, and then him transported to Lee County Jail.
“Investigators determined that this incident was drug-related,” the release states, adding the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
