Child dies from drowning
A child pulled from a park pond in Alva has died.
The 10-year-old boy, who had autism, was at Hickey Creek Preserve when he entered the water with family present. They tried immediately to rescue him but were unable to make it to him, officials said, adding they called 911 right away to summon help.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded as did the Alva Fire and Rescue Department. Rescue personnel were able to locate and retrieve the child, and administered aid on scene.
The child was then transported to the Lee Memorial Hospital but, due to the extent of injury caused by the drowning, the boy died shortly before midnight.
“Due to the nature of the incident, detectives of the Lee Country Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit responded and conducted an investigation. The investigation determined that this incident was not criminal and there are no suspicions of neglect,” a release from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office states.
No other information was immediately available.
