CCPD continues to investigate weekend traffic crash
Police are investigating a weekend traffic crash that allegedly involved a speeding driver.
On Saturday, Christopher Krishna Gokool-John, 18, of Cape Coral, was driving a BMW 326 north on Del Prado Boulevard in the inside lane at a high rate of speed, according to police. At 2:43 p.m., he abruptly changed to the middle lane at the intersection at Southeast 47th Street.
The front of the BMW struck the passenger’s side of a southbound Ford 150. The truck, which was being driven by Donald Joseph Donofrio, 62, of the Cape, had begun to left turn onto Southeast 47th Street.
Due to the impact, the Ford was forced clockwise and pushed off to the northeast of the intersection, where it came to a final rest. The BMW continued straight before eventually stopping on the road.
Police reported that Gokool-John was unresponsive upon their arrival, but he then regained consciousness. He was trauma-alerted to a local hospital for possible life-threatening injuries.
At the hospital, it was determined that Gokool-John suffered minor injuries and he was released.
Donofrio sustained minor injuries in the accident, but he refused medical attention.
The sole passenger in Gokool-John’s car, Terrance A. Lovejoy, 20, of the Cape, also sustained minor injuries during the crash. He refused any medical attention on scene, as well.
According to police, witnesses who followed the BMW from Fort Myers observed reckless driving prior to it entering Cape Coral. They also observed the car traveling approximately 70 mph to 80 mph along Del Prado before the accident. The speed limit for that area of Del Prado is posted at 35 mph.
An active criminal case for reckless driving is being conducted, police reported.
