Artists finish mural on fire tower
This Saturday, March 7, the Matlacha / Pine Island Fire Department will hold a celebration marking the completion of the mural painted on the fire tower.
Local artists Mel Meo and Cliff Schultheis were commissioned in September 2014 to paint a mural on the east wall of the training tower.
“We named it ‘7,000 years of fishing Pine Island Florida,'” Meo said. “The mural begins at the top with the Calusa Indians and finishes at the bottom with the local fishermen of today. Our plan is to put familiar island faces on the men in the mural. As you know recently we had a number of days when it rained and that held us up a bit. But we managed to get it finished.”
“The event will take place on Saturday, the 7th at the fire house,” Chief Joe Marzella said. “It will be right after the Beacon of H.O.P.E.’s Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Everyone is invited!”
Limited issue prints of the mural are available for $30 at Meo’s shop located behind the Subway at the 4-way stop at the Center. The purchase of these limited edition prints will help with the cost of the mural.
