The Pine Island VFW Post 4353 held its 4th annual Bike and Car Show Saturday, Feb. 7. More than 40 “custom” and antique cars were on display to benefit the veterans and military service personnel serving today.

“This is our 4th annual car show and every time we have an exceptional response in the turnout,” organizer and service officer Tommy Caldwell said. “This event raises money for veterans in need from past to present and even future veterans. The money raised today goes into a special fund for veterans relief and 100 percent of the funds go to the veterans.”

Caldwell owns a 1941 Chevrolet on display.

“This is a Street Rod with a big V8,” Caldwell said. “I got it 16 years ago from a friend of mine. He chopped it and when I got it I restored the interior, rebuilt the underside and rebuilt the motor. I’m only the third owner of this car.”

The 8-hour event ran from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Joe Dunlap arrived early with his 1932 Ford and his dog Justice in the passenger seat. The car body is mostly bamboo with 1959 Cadillac “Bullet” lights.

“Ninety-nine percent of this car is replica,” Dunlap said. “I bought the taillights first and basically built the car around those lights. As a kid my dad had Woody’s and when we moved down here I wanted to build something with an island theme and that’s why I built the bamboo body.

“I had Cadillacs when I was younger so I incorporated that and from my racing days I included that in the motor,” he continued. “Bits and pieces of where I came from. I don’t do a lot of car shows anymore but I do this one to support the veterans.”

During the day there were door prizes, 50/50 raffles, goodie bags, hot dogs, burgers, pulled pork sandwiches and beverages. Trophies were awarded.

All day long “oldies” music was provided by Tommy Tunes.
