Hooked on Education scholarships available
The Matlacha Hookers have announced that the organization is accepting applications for educational scholarships from qualified applicants. These scholarships may be used for tuition, books or other acceptable facets of education at either certification or licensing program, toward a college degree, trade school or technical school.
Dee Hanks, a long-time member of Hooked on Education, said she got involved a number of years ago because she thinks scholarships are important to further their education.
“Some students aren’t interested in college but might be interested in going to a vocational school like culinary, automotive repair or medical technicians,” Hanks said. “These are well paying occupations and we wanted to offer this as an option to those applying for Matlacha Hooker Scholarships.”
Those applying must have a high school diploma or equivalent and one of the following.
* Applicant is a former student of Pine Island Elementary School.
* Applicant has been a Matlacha Hooker for one year or more.
* Any of applicant’s immediate family has been a Matlacha Hooker for one year or more.
* Applicant is a resident of Greater Pine Island.

Each application must include a letter of application with an application essay; proof of acceptance from a specific school of higher education; a copy of high school transcript, including attendance record for high school students; three letters of recommendation; and a present transcript and attendance record for those students who are currently enrolled in a higher educational institute. A completed application form printed or typed in black ink is also needed.
Application packets can be picked up at all Pine Island banks, Pine Island Eagle, Pine Island Library, Pine Island Chamber of Commerce and Traders Hitching Post.
Completed applications must be submitted via U.S. Postal Service mail and postmarked no later than Saturday, April 11, 2015.
All applications must be postmarked and mailed to Matlacha Hookers Scholarship Committee, 5300 Barrow Drive, St. James City, FL 33956.
The presentation of scholarship winners will be made prior to the Hookers general meeting in May.
