Fire tower mural almost finished
The mural painted on the side of the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Department is almost completed.
Local artists Mel Meo and Cliff Schultheis were commissioned in September 2014 to paint a mural on the east wall of the training tower.
“We named it ‘7,000 years of fishing Pine Island Florida,'” Mel Meo said. “The mural begins at the top with the Calusa Indians and finishes at the bottom with the local fishermen of today. Our plan is to put familiar island faces on the men in the mural. As you know recently we had a number of days when it rained and more is expected this week. But we managed to get it almost finished. The final touches will go on over the next week or so.”
“As a government entity the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Department can not use taxpayer monies on this project,” Deputy Chief Benjamin Mickuleit said. “Therefore Mel Meo and Cliff Schultheis are asking for your help.”
Limited issue prints of the mural are available for $30 at Mel Meo’s shop located behind the Subway at the 4-corner stop. The purchase of these limited edition prints will help with the cost of the mural.
