Man injured in crash released from hospital
A Cape Coral man has been released from the hospital after crashing a dump truck last month.
As of Tuesday, Jose L. Calvo, 57, had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken Dec. 23 following the accident on Interstate 75, south of Bayshore Road, according to officials.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Calvo was driving northbound on I-75 in the dump truck, which was hauling dry concrete mix. At 5:30 p.m., the truck veered to the right for reasons unknown at the time and struck the guard rail. As a result of the impact, the truck overturned onto its right side.
Calvo was ejected. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.
One passenger in the truck, Norberto Flores, 23, also sustained serious injuries in the accident. Also transported to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment, Flores has since been treated and released.
According to the FHP, the crash caused the dry concrete mix to be split onto I-75. Northbound traffic was diverted off at the Palm Beach Boulevard exit, while emergency crews attended to the scene.
Calvo was later issued a traffic citation for careless driving, officials reported Tuesday.
