Pine Island Moose Bicycle Poker Run Jan. 31
The Pine Island Moose Bicycle Poker Run will be Saturday, Jan. 31, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is in memory of Bill Kuhn and Moose Legion.
The Pine Island Moose 1954 has been having an Annual Bicycle Poker Run for over 10 years. The poker run starts on the south end of the island at a local restaurant with stops to record players cards at several local stops: Low Key Tiki, Ragged Ass Saloon, Tropical Point Bus Stop as well as the American Legion and VFW. The event ends at the Pine Island Moose Lodge.
Poker hands must be turned in at the lodge at 3 p.m. There will be a party from 3-5 p.m. and “Last Resort” will provide the entertainment.
“This event helps our local economy,” Pine Island Moose Gov. Tom Akers said. “It also provides over 200 entrants with an enjoyable day, but most of all it provides the necessary funding for our Youth Scholarship Program. The proceeds of this event help us provide $1,000 scholarships for our Pine Island seniors. Last year we presented five $1,000 scholarships and to date we have provided over $50,000 in scholarships to help defray the costs of attending college or vocational training for our graduating seniors.”
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of need. The students forward a volunteer resume and academic achievements. Applications for these scholarships are available at school districts west high schools.
This year’s event is in memory of Bill Kuhn and Moose Legion, a long-time crusader for the scholarship program, who passed away this year.
The Moose Lodge is asking for donations of gift cards, appropriate items or cash donations for this event. Many residents appreciate gift cards to main land and island businesses to build clientele.
“As lodge governor I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to local businesses for their continued support and donations to our annual poker run,” Akers said. “Especially with assisting us in presenting scholarships to deserving graduating seniors on our island. Please submit your donation by Jan. 23 to allow us time to promote your participation in this event.”
