William Joseph Dowd
William Joseph Dowd, 81, of Bokeelia, FL, Tolland and Willimantic, CT, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014 in FL. Born September 18, 1933 to Joseph James Dowd and Helen Frances (nee Campion) Dowd. Bill’s college years were interrupted by service in the Army. He returned to complete his education and become a proud UCONN alumnus. Bill was an exceptional educator, respected and loved by colleagues, students and friends throughout his 36 year career in Connecticut. For 11 years he taught history at Manchester H.S., then became Professor of Political Science at Manchester Community College. Bill was among the first faculty members at MCC, and was the Faculty Grievance Officer. He was influential in bringing the American Federation of Teachers to Connecticut, and he worked tirelessly to ensure fairness in the workplace. He also lectured at Eastern Connecticut State University, University of Hartford, and Hartford College for Women. Bill was committed to serving his community. He was a member of the Tolland Democratic Town Committee, a little league coach and, for 7 years, he served as Chairman of the Tolland Board of Education. Bill was an avid golfer and a sports enthusiast. Upon retiring to FL, Bill became a mentor in the Lee County Take Stock in Children program. He touched and influenced so many lives. His contribution was enormous. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Bill is survived by his loving wife of more than 57 years Phyllis; daughter Joanne and her husband Scott Ladd; son William and his wife Kye Dowd; daughter Diane Dowd and 3 grandchildren Charlie Ladd, Artur and Victoria Dowd. He was predeceased by his brother Jerry Dowd. A memorial service will be held in CT in 2015.
