Cape Coral man dies in Collier County crash
A traffic crash Wednesday in Collier County killed a Cape Coral man and injured another.
Alexander Altieri, 88, was driving a Mercury Marquis westbound on state Route 82, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. At approximately 7:51 p.m., just past Gator Slough Lane, he attempted to pass a semi-truck also headed westbound, but he encountered a GMC box truck traveling eastbound on 82.
The driver of the GMC, Marc Calvaire, 59, of Immokalee, steered right to avoid a collision.
The FHP reported that the left front side of the Mercury struck the left front side of the GMC. The Mercury veered to the right, then swerved back to left, running off the south shoulder of the roadway. The Mercury turned onto its passenger side and the roof struck a tree before it came to a final stop.
Altieri was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his vehicle, Agnes Altieri, 89, also of Cape Coral, sustained minor injuries in the accident and was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.
As of Thursday, she had been discharged from the hospital, according to officials.
Calvaire reportedly sustained no injuries in the crash.
The FHP reported that all three involved were wearing seat belts at the time.
