Mariner students selected as Girls State representatives by Pine Island Legion Post 136 Women’s Auxiliary
Last Wednesday evening the American Legion Post 136 Women’s Auxiliary on Pine Island recognized the two young women selected to attend Girls State Leadership Program. The teens, Jordan Myers and Jasmine Barry, are seniors at Mariner High School in Cape Coral.
American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a nonpartisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship and love for God and country. Since the inception of the American Legion Girls State program in 1937, nearly 1 million young people have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their state and local government works. The girls are nominated by their guidance counselors during the summer of their junior year. They go to Tallahassee in their senior year.
“We are honored to have Jordan Myers with us tonight,” Women’s Auxiliary President Linda Lewis said at the group’s meeting. “The other young lady, Jasmine Barry, was unable to be here tonight. These two young ladies attended Girl’s State in June.”
Guylyn Demeyere then told the the auxiliary about Myers.
“The interviewing process is always interesting for Girl’s State,” Demeyere said. “It’s always an awesome task because we always have so many young women who are so great. This time we interviewed 10 or 11 young ladies to fill just two positions. But there’s always one or two that just stand out and Miss Jordan Myers was one of those two. I think the first thing you notice about Jordan is her stature. She has such a great presence.”
Myers is a very active senior at Mariner High School. She is the president of the Key Club. She is an avid reader of history, math and technology and she also started, and is the president of, the Mariner Book Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society and she also works full time.
“One thing that stood out during the interview process is that Jordan has such a strong entrepreneurial spirit,” Demeyere said. “To find that quality in such a young person is very unusual. She also won a scholarship last year to attend an entrepreneur’s workshop at Stanford University in California. We are very proud to have Jordan represent us at this year’s Girl’s State. She then introduced Myers to the group.
“Thank you all so much for having me here today,” Myers said. “This was a huge honor to be selected to go to Girl’s State. It was such a wonderful experience and it changed my life in so many ways. Like learning how the process works and how people go about making and changing these bills. I learned so much about government and I want to thank all of you for sponsoring me and for this amazing experience.”
Myers is planning an entrepreneurial career with the goal of owning a book store.
She has applied to Kent State and Ohio State but her school of preference is the Florida Institute of Technology. She plans on majoring in entrepreneurial studies and computer programming.
