Cape man involved in fatal crash released from hospital
A Cape Coral man has been released from the hospital after being involved in a fatal weekend traffic crash.
As of Tuesday, Frank Christopher Sprague, 37, had been released from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was transported Sunday following the accident on Diplomat Parkway, according to officials.
At about 3:37 p.m., Sprague was headed east on Diplomat in the outside lane in a Chevrolet Corvette, driven by Jason William Stewart, 44, of Cape Coral. Also traveling east on Diplomat in the outside lane was William Scott Johnsen, 60, of the Cape, on a bicycle, the Cape police reported.
In the 600 block, the front right side of the Corvette reportedly struck the back of Johnsen’s bicycle, ejecting him from the bike and throwing him onto the windshield of the vehicle. The Corvette then left the road and traveled east through a vacant field, where Johnsen was ejected from the vehicle.
According to police, the Corvette entered back onto Diplomat and Stewart lost control of the vehicle. The Corvette crossed the eastbound then westbound lanes before coming to rest in a vacant field.
Johnsen reportedly died on scene from his injuries.
Sprague sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, police reported.
Stewart had minor injuries but was not transported.
According to police, it appears neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the accident.
Johnsen was wearing a helmet and had safety lights on at the time.
This is the fifth traffic fatality in Cape Coral for the year. In 2013, Cape police recorded 18 traffic fatalities, which does not include three fatalities ruled as medical deaths, officials reported.
