FISHFEST returns to Matlacha this weekend
One thing that Pine Islanders are very good at is making sure that no one goes without. Whether it is a good education, exposure to the arts or something as fundamental as making sure that no one goes to bed hungry, those more fortunate are always willing to help those in need. For the third consecutive year, Kip Lawrence and his friends will present FISHFEST to ensure one fundamental need is fulfilled.
“Much of the supplies at the Pine Island Food Pantry get depleted over the holiday season and that is why we hold this post-holiday fund raiser,” Lawrence said. “Just because the holidays are over, it doesn’t mean the need goes away, in fact, from what I am told, the need is even greater this year and it is our hope to collect enough food and cash to restock the pantry shelves during this event.”
FISHFEST will be staged at the Olde Fish House in Matlacha on Friday, Jan. 14, beginning at 6 p.m. and will feature the performing talents of Lawrence who will be joined by fellow Yard Dog, Brian Travis, Strange Arrangement and newcomer, Michelle Bundy.
“Michelle and I have been doing a lot of practicing and she has really blossomed as a stage performer,” said Lawrence. “Michelle is an outstanding country/western performer and learning her genre, which is quite different than I am accustom to playing, has been a challenging yet exciting adventure for both of us. I think the audience will enjoy our blend of traditional and new country/western style.”
Bundy made her first splash on the Pine Island/Matlacha music scene last fall when she performed at one of the season’s first Creative Coast Concerts.
“Right away the audience fell in love with Michelle. She has a powerful yet angelic voice as well as a passion for her music,” said Lawrence. “Those who missed her first performance, won’t want to make that mistake again.”
Also in the spotlight on Jan. 14, will be the upbeat band known as Strange Arrangement. Lawrence also has spent time in the recording studio with this young, energetic group.
“Spending time with Warren and Gregory is always energizing wether on the stage or in the studio,” aid Lawrence. “Their enthusiasm is contagious and these talented young men will go a long way in the years to come. You just never know what they are going to do next and I look forward to seeing what they bring to FISHFEST.”
Strange Arrangement headed by the brother’s Van Kirk are familiar to audiences on Pine Island and have performed at numerous fund raising events and have performed regularly in Matlacha and St. James City as well as other venues throughout Lee County. This group will also return for a second year to headline at the upcoming Taste of Pine Island.
In addition to serving as emcee for the evening, Lawrence too will take the stage alongside Brian Travis. As part of the trio, the Yard Dogs, Lawrence and Travis will be sure to get toes tapping with their original compositions known as “Florida Swamp Music” a combination of cajun, zydeco, bluegrass and folk music.
This is a free concert, however, Lawrence and his performers are asking that everyone who plans to attend bring donations of non-perishable food, paper products, personal items and cash to contribute to the Pine Island Food Pantry. Lawn chairs and coolers will be allowed during the event and those interested in sampling the freshly prepared seafood dishes, the kitchen will be open at Olde Fish House where meals of fresh fish, shrimp and other locally caught seafood items will be available for purchase.
