Suspect sought in connection to Cape bank robbery

By Staff | Jan 3, 2011

Cape Coral Police are looking for a North Fort Myers man suspected or robbing the BB&T bank on Del Prado Boulevard Friday, Dec. 31.
Cape police reported they have probable cause to suspect Lawrence Charles Derby Jr., 42, of the robbery.
City Spokeswoman Connie Barron said Monday that Derby is still at large and being sought in connection with the crime.
According to a police report, witnesses saw a white male in his 30s or 40s of medium height with brown hair running from the bank parking lot into the Coralwood Parking lot.
The man appeared to be carrying a bag with money in it, and he drove away in a Gold Ford Explorer, police said.
The vehicle was found abandoned near the scene of the crime, but Barron said it was unclear how close it was to BB&T bank.
“He abandoned his vehicle after the robbery, but there are no details on how far from the scene it was,” Barron said.
Clothing found in the vehicle matched witness descriptions and surveillance video of the robbery suspect, who was wearing a Philadelphia Phillies baseball hat, dark jeans and a white thermal shirt with a red emblem.
BB&T Bank Teller Linda Birnbaum said the robbery suspect presented a note that demanded money and motioned that he had a gun. Birnbaum said the suspect threatened to kill her if she notified the authorities, according to the report.
Derby’s whereabouts are unknown at this time. Detectives are asking anyone with information to either contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS or the Cape Coral Police Department at 574-3223.
