My comments on the bail out of G.M.
To the editor:
There is a lot of concern by Republican senators about the extraordinary bail out of bankrupted auto ex giant General Motors.
As a retiree of General Motors, I have to really agree with what the senators are saying. It really is a stupid idea to allow G.M. to continue to make cars and compete with the various states that spent billions of state tax dollars importing car assembly plants from over seas.
These various states should expect that their U.S. senators will do everything that they can to protect their investment in state taxpayer monies in these assembly plants that costs them billions of dollars and training at their state universities.
If you think about it is really preposterous to think that a vertically integrated company such as G.M., which made most of all the parts that go into the car, paid higher union wages for these parts, should be allowed to compete with a horizontal company that farms out all its parts to various economic developing countries all over the world and merely assembles the product in the U.S.
And now for the real pity to allow the U.S. taxpayers to bail out what is left of the decimation of G.M. after the bankruptcy, it is plain awful to have to pay for the remaining jobs and the reduced pay for the nasty vertical integrated company that found itself an easy target of these shred business states that found billions of taxpayer funds as a way to bring in a few assembly jobs knowing full well that a vertical companies with high wages could not compete against their transplants.
No doubt stealing jobs from one state by another state by donating tons of money, discounts in taxes and gifts of higher education will no doubt lead to higher unemployment with less pay.
All I can say is to these worthwhile senators is good job in identifying the weaknesses of our companies and exploiting them. Maybe they can use these same skills to reduce the size of our government that we can no longer afford.
Sincerely,
Leo Amos
