Big Band era returns to Pine Island

2 min read

Names like Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw summon memories of a simpler time in our nation’s history. A carefree time when dancing to the sounds of a big band was better than relaxing with the latest issue of the Saturday Evening Post while listening to Texico’s Bell Telephone Hour on the radio.

To bring back these times of gayety and good old-fashion fun, members of the Pine Island Elks will welcome back this era for an evening of live and not- so-live entertainment. On Wednesday, Dec. 1, the Elks will welcome members and qualified guests at the lodge for a Big Band Dance Night. The lodge will open at 5:30 p.m. to offer its regular kitchen menu until 7 p.m. Then at 7 p.m. David Dean will serve as DJ for the evening, spinning tunes from not only Dorsey, Miller and Shaw, but selections from Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Cloonie, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Jo Stafford, Patty Page, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Etta James, Kick Haymes, Harry James, Les Brown, Helen Forest, Tex Beneke, Cole Porter and more.

According to organizer, Jim Flanders, he has also lined up a few surprise guests for the evening as well.

“We have lined up a special performance from none other than the Andrew Sisters, who are sure to be a big hit with this audience,” Flanders said. “Also appearing will be some other really big name performers so folks are going to want to be sure to mark their calendars for this great night of entertainment.”

In addition to dinner and dancing, all attending will have a chance at trophy awards to be given to the best dance couple of the evening.
