Vehicle fire under investigation
A weekend vehicle fire remained under investigation Tuesday.
Cape Coral police and fire units responded to a vehicle fire at about 5:54 a.m. Sunday in the 3800 block of Northwest 45th Street. The vehicle was badly burned, however officers were able to distinguish a tag number. The tag belonged to a 2002 BMW, registered to a man residing in Miami.
The burn damage is estimated at $25,000, according to a police report.
Police contacted the owner of the BMW, who stated that he was visiting a friend in the Cape and had reported the vehicle stolen Saturday with the Fort Myers Police Department. The FMPD reported that the man told them that he had lost his keys between 7 and 9 p.m. at a bar and he wanted his car back.
The man also told the FMPD that he did not want to press charges and “would just like his vehicle back,” the Cape police report states.
Cape police again spoke with the owner, who said that he had lost his car, which meant someone had stolen it. He also said when he was asked by the FMPD if he wanted to press charges, he stated, “I just want my car back.”
A fire inspector responded and took over the investigation.
“We did investigate this fire, and we called the State Fire Marshal’s Office to assist with the investigation,” Battalion Chief Alan Carter of the Cape Coral Fire Department said Tuesday. “It is still under investigation at this time.”
The owner of the BMW did not return a phone message seeking comment.
