Area food bank needs Thanksgiving donations
The Harry Chapin Food Bank is seeking monetary donations or turkeys for Thanksgiving this year, so they can accommodate their non-profit agencies with a traditional turkey dinner for families.
Although the Harry Chapin Food Bank was able to purchase 700 turkeys with a special donation of about $7,000, they are still seeking an additional 5,000 turkeys to provide to families in need.
“We are getting smaller 12- pound turkeys to accommodate four people,” Associate Director Joyce Jacobs said.
A donation of approximately $11 will purchase a 12-pound turkey to provide assistance for families in need.
Jacobs explained that the need to provide turkeys is up over last year, which was also up from the year before.
“It’s an exceptional time in our lives,” she said about more middle income families needing assistance. “There are more and more families that have never had a need before.”
Turkeys can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the warehouse at 3760 Fowler Street in Fort Myers.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank has encouraged all of its agencies to collect canned hams as well, so they can try and provide a nice Thanksgiving dinner for the families if they do not receive enough turkeys to hand out.
“We want to see this as a great Thanksgiving for everyone,” she said, adding that she hopes people will be generous.
