GOP builds on large Fla. legislative majority
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — It’s been a great night for Florida Republicans in the Legislature from the leaders on down.
Incoming Senate President Mike Haridopolos was re-elected Tuesday without opposition, while presumptive House Speaker Dean Cannon and Sen. John Thrasher, who doubles up as the state Republican Party chairman, won in impressive fashion.
With 74 percent of the expected vote counted, Thrasher had 59 percent to Ponte Vedra Democrat Deborah Gianoulis 41 percent. Cannon had 58 percent to Democrat Amy Mercado’s 42 percent in their central Florida contest.
Republicans gained two seats in the Senate to build a veto proof majority of 28-12 while threatening to reach 80 seats in the 120-member House and do the same.
