Center needs more color like April’s
To the editor:
A large round of applause goes to April’s Island Salon for the beautiful renovations that have been done. It is such a welcoming treat when entering the business district of our lovely island to see tropical colors and themes presented in such a welcoming manner. It is tasteful, cheery, and is a beautiful enhancement!
As full-time residents, we have often wondered why color seems to dissipate after driving through Matlacha. Pine Island center is well poised to celebrate our island by adding color to local buildings and by identifying some type of landmark.
I realize that the disabled flag pole by Subway is a testament to our uninvited visitor, Charley, but for those new to Pine Island, it is just a dilapidated eyesore. Perhaps the community could utilize the great artistic talent that is here to design a more inviting center. One idea that comes to mind is a roundabout. Statistically, these are safer and provide a better traffic flow than ordinary stop signs. I am not offering this suggestion randomly, but rather based on almost 30 years of law enforcement and traffic design. There are other possibilities that are not so drastic or costly. For example, we could redesign the intersection to showcase all the beautiful palms that are grown locally. How about adding a coat of bright paint to the establishments at the center.
Pine Islanders are special people and I know that many would contribute their artistic flair, time, labor, and maybe even supplies. Does anybody else think so? We’re ready to help.
