Art League continues to add new talent

By Staff | Sep 18, 2010

The Cape Coral Art League is featuring a new instructor in October for a beginners oil and acrylic painting class.
Beginner level to advanced level art classes are held throughout the year for all mediums by accomplished artists.
Instructor Patty Sole will teach a new class for the Art League beginning on Oct. 12 called the Fundamentals of Oil and Acrylic Painting from 9 a.m. until noon. The emphasis of the class is to provide practical knowledge to participants on how to create paintings.
Sole said she wants to teach beginners, so she can give them a good foundation of what they will need to pursue the craft.
“I want them to be armed, so when they go into advanced classes they know what they are doing,” she said.
The four-week class will start off with teaching the students what kinds of canvas are available to paint on with oils and acrylics. The class also will explain the different paint brushes and shapes available and how they are intended to be used.
Sole said she also will touch upon the difference between acrylic paint and oils and how to use them properly for a painting. How to apply work onto a canvas, along with painting techniques also will be demonstrated during the class.
“The little things will put you on your way,” she said.
The class is $55 for members and $75 for non-members.
Other classes include painting in pastels, mixed media and fused glass in miniature.
“There is something for everybody,” Cape Coral Art League Show Chairman Susie Nelke said.
The Art League also features gallery shows and a gift shop.
The Art League has a themed gallery show at the beginning of every month from October through July with an average of 85 paintings displayed on the walls. Nelke said they also have two juried gallery shows a year.

The gallery shows are accompanied by a reception, along with jazz musician Vinny Mischitell and pieces of artwork for sale.
The current gallery show, which will run until Oct. 1 is the $99 Summer Sale. The sale has more than 80 paintings hanging on the wall for purchase.
“The prices are never that good for the regular shows of the season,” Nelke said. “They are the best prices of the season.”
The Art League’s gift shop also has an assortment of items for individuals to buy. Nelke said every member donates a 5×7 original canvas painting for the gift shop to raise money.
Annual memberships are available for $35 and are good January through December. Education Coordinator Gail Dale said the membership can be prorated for those who join later in the year.
The Art League is also in the process of enhancing the exterior of the building to better promote what they have to offer.
Nelke said a team of artists is working together to better promote the art league by painting larger letters on the outside of the building, along with a few large mural paintings to depict that they are an art organization.
“We are waiting right now for the permits,” she said. “In about a week we should be starting.”
Dale said the Art League also holds a monthly meeting on the first Monday of every month at 9:30 a.m., which is open to the public. The meeting features a demonstration from an artist. Coffee and goodies are also provided.
The Cape Coral Art League is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For more information call (239) 772-5657 or visit www.capecoralartleague.org. The Cape Coral Art League is located at 516 Cultural Park Blvd.
